LNY weekend booking — 2027 example (Elk Grove)
Bao Thien Ngo · cPALSs Festivals Chair · August 2026
This is a worked example of the LNY weekend booking decision engine for Greater Sacramento — Elk Grove Regional Park, Lunar New Year 2027. Other hosts can steal the structure even if their venue inventory looks different.

The choice (2027)
LNY Day: Saturday February 6, 2027
Super Bowl LXI: Sunday February 14 (~afternoon PT) — first Super Bowl on Valentine’s Day
After Cosumnes CSD confirmed park inventory (August 2026), only two Sat–Sun weekends were available:
| Option A | Option B | |
|---|---|---|
| Weekend | Feb 13–14 | Feb 27–28 |
| Tet-relative | week +1 | ~week +3 |
| Saturday | Story / youth day (Soul Torrent) | Same |
| Sunday | Tết Tailgate (Super Bowl + Valentine’s) | Full Sunday — e.g. Relay Cup + Youth Culture Day |
| Rain likelihood (ISO wk) | ~31% wet weekend (week 6) | ~36% wet weekend (week 8) |
Other weekends in the Jan–early March window were unavailable — pavilion weddings, not “we preferred not to.”
Park weekends here book about 365 days out. Lock 2027 first; deliberate 2028 next.
How A and B differ
Inventory already fixed the set. Soft factors only rank the two.
Closer to LNY Day
- A: week +1 — better holiday proximity
- B: ~week +3 — farther from Tết
Private family gatherings
- A: higher near-Tet risk (still untested with guests)
- B: lower near-Tet risk (still untested)
Family plans by age cohort
No data yet. What households with toddlers vs elementary vs teens vs multi-gen actually do on week +1 vs +3 is unknown — sports, travel, parties, other parks, rest. A family-oriented product needs that competitive map to capture the market; it does not currently tip A vs B.
Community collisions (draw intensity)
Do not count events — use estimated draw. Prior season (2026) taught that later is not quieter:
| Tet-rel (2026) | Weekend | Σ est. draw | What carried it |
|---|---|---|---|
| −2 | Feb 7–8 | ~5K | Creative Space + SCNCCA / Arden cluster |
| −1 | Feb 14–15 | ~9K | Capstone 5–6K (official park estimate) + same-day peers + parish evening |
| 0 | Feb 21–22 | ~0.4K | Lull |
| +1 | Feb 28–Mar 1 | ~12–16K‡ | City of Trees / Mardi Gras (organizer claim 10–20K‡) |
| +2 | Mar 7–8 | ~1K | Ticketed concert (imputed) |
| +3 | — | ~0 | Clear |
‡ = claim / honesty gap — still useful as “this weekend can dwarf leftovers.”
For 2027 (planning estimates on the landscape sheet — not confirmed):
- Warm-up peers mostly land ~Jan 30 (clear of A and B)
- Cache Creek concert estimated Sat Feb 27 — same Saturday as Option B’s youth day
- Mardi Gras twin season TBD (Fat Tuesday Feb 9) — could pressure A or B depending on when they announce
Faith-based callout
Sacramento Martyrs Hội Chợ pattern stays week −1 or 0 — neither A nor B is the usual slot. Confirm when 2027 bulletins post. About 77% of Vietnamese American adults identify with a religion (Pew) — faith calendars are mainstream, not niche.
Super Bowl + Valentine’s (Option A Sunday)
Mainstream interest is already supported (~⅔ U.S. Super Bowl reach; ~53–56% celebrate Valentine’s). Open questions: Tailgate at the park vs leave-by-~2 for home, and same-day game-vs-date tradeoffs. Default product on A Sunday = capture (Tailgate), not flee.
School calendars
- A: weekend before Presidents Day Mon Feb 15 (family travel risk); no national SAT/ACT that Saturday
- B: ACT national date Sat Feb 27 — direct clash with Saturday youth programming; college finals are not a February factor for Sac State / UC Davis
Youth orgs (VSA / TNTT / GDPT)
School calendars do not say what these groups do. Fair prior: Tet-geared. Mode unknown (dance vs day-of logistics vs free). Until surveyed with campus partners (e.g. UVSA), both weekends underweight youth-org reality.
Sunday ops readiness
- A: Tailgate already designed for Super Bowl Sunday
- B: Full Sunday stack (Relay Cup + Youth Culture Day) still needs build
Provisional recommendation
Book Option A — February 13–14, 2027.
Why, on current evidence:
- Closer to LNY Day
- Sunday product ready (Tailgate) for Super Bowl + Valentine’s
- No national ACT on Saturday
- Weather roughly tied / slightly favors A
- “Prefer not Super Bowl” is organizer preference — mainstream interest shares do not support fleeing without Tailgate-vs-home evidence
Caveats (re-score when these land):
- Family weekend plans by age cohort across Tet-season weekends (research TODO — no data yet)
- Youth-org activity mode (VSA / TNTT / GDPT) still unverified
- Guest preference: park Tailgate vs home TV
- Peer 2027 dates (especially Cache Creek, Mardi Gras, District56 / SCNCCA) still estimates
Steering still locks the date. After lock: confirm with the park, update public copy, and start 2028 deliberation on the 365-day clock.
