Mid-Autumn / autumn festival — venue factors

Bao Thien Ngo · cPALSs Festivals Chair · August 2026

Date pick and site pick are coupled — inventory differs by facility — but they use different evidence. This page is a suitability checklist any Mid-Autumn / lantern host can fork before locking a park or hall.

Hard gates first

  1. Will the operator permit your product (evening lantern walk, stage, food) on the weekends you want?
  2. Local blackouts — e.g. Cosumnes CSD has made clear that Elk Grove Regional Park is not appropriate for Mid-Autumn / GLF-class events in the ~one month before and after Giant Pumpkin Festival (GPF typically early October on that campus). Do not fight GPF on the same site.
  3. Booking lead time — many CSD park weekends open ~365 days out.

Everything below is soft suitability research — parking, shade, buildings — not a substitute for a yes/no from parks or City facilities.

Candidate sites (example set — Greater Sacramento)

Site Typical role Notes
Neighborhood CSD park (e.g. Derr-Okamoto) Lantern evening / park layout Candidate — confirm inventory
Community hall / Town Hall (e.g. Laguna Town Hall) Prior Mid-Autumn home for some hosts Candidate — hall + parking rules differ
Elk Grove Regional Park LNY / GPF campus Often no-go in GPF ± ~1 month
Civic campus (e.g. District 56) Peer Mid-Autumn hosts Usually a lane choice, not automatic default

Add your own rows; do not invent fees or capacity until the facility confirms.

Factors to weigh

Access & parking

  • Public parking capacity and overflow
  • Walk from stalls to gates
  • Evening egress (exit crush after dusk close)
  • Drop-off / transit / ADA routes

Buildings & infrastructure

  • Indoor hall (rain, elders, registration, storage)
  • Restrooms and lighting
  • Power and water for stage + food + LED lanterns
  • Load-in paths for canopy / trucks

Family landscape (lantern product)

  • Playgrounds (early evening kids draw)
  • Picnic tables / seating
  • Shade / tree groves (September heat before dusk)
  • Open lawn or loop for a dusk procession
  • Flat stage pad and neighbor noise

Ops & policy

  • Permit hours / noise curfew vs your public close
  • Alcohol / security rules
  • Fee vs in-kind history
  • Same-weekend peer conflict (another Mid-Autumn in the same city)

How to use this

  1. Shortlist 2–3 sites that clear hard gates.
  2. Field-walk each (afternoon heat + dusk walk).
  3. Pull official facility maps / special-event packets.
  4. Score TBD → partial → strong per factor — prefer notes over memory.
  5. Name the site, then ask inventory for your moon-relative Saturdays (booking engine).
